A Short History of Golf in Medicine Hat
Golf has always been a favourite pastime in Medicine Hat from its days as a gentlemen’s sport to its now all-inclusive courses open to families and all levels of players.
The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club’s history goes back to 1913 when club shareholders met and later secured a six-acre plot of land 6 miles east of the city of Highway 41. In 1934, the course was relocated to its current location on land leased by the City of Medicine Hat.
In 1977, the city received a grant to build a clubhouse on the property, but after a fire destroyed the original clubhouse in 1980, it was replaced the following year.
Opened in 1922, the Connaught Golf Course recently celebrated its 95th anniversary and has been located at its present site for more than 60 years.
Now, many more golf courses have joined the greens, for all ages and skill levels.
Work on your golf game by visiting one or more of our six golf courses, all of which are located within an easy drive from hotels.
Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course
A short 8.2-km drive along the Trans Canada Highway from our accommodations, Cottonwood Coulee is an executive–style, family-friendly 18-hole Par 4 course that has panoramic views of the city coulee. Drive, chip and putt along the blue-grass fairways, 38 sand bunkers, and bent-grass greens, starting from four tee distances with different ratings and slopes. The club also has a state-of-the-art indoor golf simulator, which allows participants to play a round all year long while enjoying a beverage or appetizer in the clubhouse.
Connaught Golf Club
Said to be Southern Alberta’s “friendliest place to play,” Connaught is a well-established, full-service, and semi-private golf course located just a five-minute drive from our hotel. The Par-3 championship, 18-hole course features five sets of tees for all different skill levels and measures 6,943 yards from the longest tee, with a slope rating of 125 and a 72.8 USGA rating. The club also features a full practice facility with public driving range, a pro shop, licensed pub, restaurant and outdoor patio, where you can take in the spectacular views of tree-lined fairways.
Desert Blume Golf Club
A world-class facility, Desert Blume is located off South Boundary Road, approximately a 7-minute drive from our Comfort Inn and Suites hotel. Desert Blume is Medicine Hat's newest golf course, opening in 2007. The links style course is set in a true prairie desert community. The par 72 layout provides an enjoyable and challenging golf outing with 4 sets of tee boxes offering playability for all. It also features a full grass driving range, large putting green, and short game practice facility with greenside bunker, as well as a full-service clubhouse and pro shop. Desert Blume played host to the Canadian Collegiate Golf National Championships in October 2018.
Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club
The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club is a Par 72 Championship golf course nestled along the north shore cliffs of the South Saskatchewan River next to Police Point Park. Home to several tournaments, it was host to Canadian Junior Boys Championship in 2018 and voted the best golf course in 2019 from the Medicine Hat News Readers’ Choice Awards. The semi-private club has a mission to provide its members and guests with a “high-quality family and social country club lifestyle with the highest standards of service, including a superlatively maintained golf course.” Visitors can also improve their skills on the driving range and enjoy a meal in the clubhouse.
Paradise Valley Golf Course
A family-friendly golf course, Paradise Valley features an 18-hole range with a Par-3 on every hole. New golfers and those with a low-handicap can enjoy various challenges and hazards while taking in scenic views. Enjoy an on-course beverage service, practice facilities, “glow” night golfing events, as well as a restaurant and outdoor deck.
Riverview Golf Club
Just 10 km west of the City of Medicine Hat, in the community of Redcliff, Riverview is a public golf course perched on the cliffs and hoodoo-filled landscape overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. The course features 4 sets of tee boxes to accommodate golfers of all levels and offers a junior program, discounted rates for military members of the Canadian and British Armed Forces as well as corporate memberships and game-pass memberships.

Ways to Lower Your Golf Handicap
Looking to improve your golf game before you hit the links? Don’t divot. Try some of these ideas that will stoke your stroke.
Book a Lesson with a Pro
Learning from a pro is one of the best ways for beginners and even advanced players to learn how to play the game of golf properly. Most of Medicine Hat’s champion courses offer a golf pro or academy where you can book a private, semi-private or group lesson.
Trevor Moore, who is PGA of Canada Certified Golf Professional, is also available for private and group lessons and provides various golf programs at Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course.
A pro can help you figure out important steps, such as:
- Proper grip
- Correct set-up and stance
- Target aiming
- Swing plane correction
- What clubs to use
Play with Others
Golf wasn’t made to be a solitary sport. Along with the fresh air, exercise and socialization that golf provides, playing with others is one of the best ways to improve your game, as it kicks in those competitive juices and allows you to bounce off ideas and share tips. Travelling solo to our accommodations and looking for a golf partner? Why not contact one of the golf clubs to enquire whether you can join a golf league game or if any members are willing to show you their home course.
Practice on a Golf Simulator
Sweeten your swing and get your groove back by practising on an indoor golf simulator. A virtual golf game is the closest thing to reality you’ll get to actually playing outdoors, and allows you to work on the mechanics of your game in the off-season, at night, or whenever you can’t make it on the course. One of the fun things to do during your visit is to try out the new golf simulator at Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course.
Fun with the Family
Most of Medicine Hat’s golf courses are open to young players when accompanied by an adult. However, if your kids are nervous or not interested in playing a long game, you can always take them out to these fun golf activities for something a little different.
